Mythological Creatures are not new to us, we have been reading about them a lot, we have seen them in movies and books, but did they really exist?
But out of the creatures we know many of them were inspired by science and nature not just by imagination.
It has been discovered that the sites of the ancient myths were often places where large numbers of fossils were discovered. In trying to make sense of what they were seeing, many myths were born.
There are mermaids tales almost from every corner of the world. As long as the people sailed through the oceans there have been the legends of the mermaid.
One of the earliest tales was that of Thessalonike. She was said to be the half-sister of Alexander the Great. After going on a danger-filled quest to discover the Fountain of Youth, he rinsed his sister’s hair in the immortal water.
She tried to drown herself in the sea but she couldn’t so she decide to stay in the oceans as a mermaid. Legend had it that she would call out to sailors, “Is Alexander the king alive?” If they replied, “He lives and reigns and conquers the world,” she would allow them to sail away. But if they said he was dead, she would transform into a monster and drag the ship to the bottom of the ocean.
One possible explanation for the persistence of mermaid sightings is that sailors were mistaking a mermaid, a fabulous creature with the body of a fish but the head and torso of a beautiful woman, with a manatee aka a sea cow.
People were again hooked to the vampires after the novel of Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1897. It is about a thin pale stranger with improbable accent who sleeps in coffin more or less immortal.
Stoker’s Dracula was mainly inspired from the historical accounts of Vlad the impaler. It can also be possible that Stoker’s novel inspired from rumours and superstition on death and burial at those times and lack of knowledge on body decaying.
After death, the skin of the corpse shrinks. So its teeth and fingernails become prominent and can appear to have grown. Also, as internal organs break down, “purge fluid” can leak out of the nose and mouth, leaving a dark stain. People may have interpreted this as the corpse drinking blood from the living.
There are many theories suggesting the existence of Giants.
To start with, Giants were first mentioned in the Bible, Goliath there were believed to be almost 274 cms.
A study published in the Ulster Medical Journal suggested that Goliath, famously killed by David with a slingshot, had “an identifiable family tree suggestive of autosomal dominant inheritance.”
In Greek mythology, we have gigantes , a tribe of 100 Giants born from the goddess Gaia after she was impregnated from blood during the castraction with Uranus.
Hydra is a gigantic sea serpent with 9 heads in the Greek mythology. One of the head is believed to be immortal. If one of the head is cut off it would grow two more in the flesh wound.
The myth of the hydra may have been inspired by nature. There have been many documented cases of snakes with multiple heads (although nine would be pushing it). The incidence of polycephaly in reptiles appears to be higher than in any other species.
Killing the hydra was one of the 12 labors of Hercules. To achieve this, he enlisted the help of his nephew, who cauterized the wounds as Hercules cut off the heads until only the immortal head remained. Hercules cut off that one, too, and buried it under a heavy rock.
All the GOT fans can connect with the Dire wolves, they are most known with their association with the Stark Children. However it is not the imagination of the GOT creators.
The Dire wolves are bigger in size than the modern day wolves. They lived in America until it’s extinction 10000 years ago.
Over 4,000 fossilized remains of dire wolves have been discovered at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. It is believed that they may have become trapped while feeding on the carcasses of other ensnared animals. There is no evidence that an albino dire wolf ever existed, although albino cubs have been born in the modern wolf population.
