A Romanian duo was convicted and jailed this week after the police solved the mystery of passenger’s luggage disappearing on the way to Paris Beauvais airport.
The two thieves used a fairly new modus operandi to steal from the passengers. One of the men would curl up inside a suitcase whilst his accomplice would place him in the luggage compartment of the bus on the 90-kilometer journey between Beauvais airport and Paris
Once alone in the luggage compartment under the bus, the accomplice would pull a strap to unzip himself and then begin stealing.
The trip took a little over an hour and people kept complaining that their stuff had been stolen out of their luggage. However, the Police in northern France were baffled as to how the robberies were happening on a moving bus.
But then one of the bus drivers figured out what was happening, when he spotted a large suitcase being loaded into the bus. The driver noticed the suitcase moving on its own. Acting on his tip-off, police at Beauvais pounced on the man who picked up the suitcase and a smaller black rucksack as he arrived.
After arresting him, detectives unzipped the bag to find his accomplice hidden inside, along with the stolen goods. “In the black bag we found two laptops, money and various objects of value,” a police source told reporters.
Both men, aged around 40, had criminal records for theft.
The one who hid inside the suitcase was sentenced to eight months in jail on Monday, while the other man was given a one-year prison sentence because of his more serious criminal record.
