Leonardo DiCaprio donates $1 million towards Hurricane Harvey’s relief efforts

Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest star to join Hollywood effort to raise money for Hurricane Harvey’s victims.

Leonardo through his foundation Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has pledged $1 million as the inaugural donation to the newly launched United Way Harvey Recovery Fund.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Leonardo DiCaprio and his foundation,” said United Way Worldwide president and CEO Brian Gallagher. “Responding to Hurricane Harvey requires the best of all of us — and that’s what this gift represents.”

United Way Worldwide, largest privately funded non-profit, said the United Way Harvey Recovery Fund “will distribute 100 percent of donations for recovery in the affected areas, community by community, in the months and years ahead.”

This is not the first time that Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has donated towards disaster relief efforts. The foundation has in the past, made donations to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Other celebrity figures to have donated towards the hurricane relief efforts are Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ruby Rose, Rachael Ray, Ellen Degeneres, and Fall Out Boy.

Earlier this week Sandra Bullock also donated $1 million to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts. Kim Kardashian and her family has also donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross.

Hurricane Harvey has claimed at least 31 lives till now and close to 500,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed by flooding and high winds in Texas.
