Elon Musk unveiled the first official photo of his SpaceX spacesuit via Instagram on Wednesday.

In the post, Musk says it “was incredibly hard to balance aesthetics and function. Easy to do either separately.” He also says it’s not him in the new suit, rather a SpaceX engineer.

The suits will be worn by NASA astronauts for the commercial crew program when SpaceX starts launching people to and from the International Space Station.

The new SpaceX spacesuit is sleek and looks more like something you might see in a sci-fi movie.

This could be because movie costume designer Jose Fernandez, who is behind the outfits worn by Batman, Wonder Woman and Spiderman, was hired by Musk to design the SpaceX suit.

“[Mr Musk] wanted it to look stylish. It had to be practical but also needed to look great,” Mr Fernandez said in an interview with Bleep Magazine.

“When people put this spacesuit on, he wants them to look better than they did without it, like a tux. You look heroic in it.”

Musk says the new SpaceX suit has been tested on Earth — and it works.
