Recent discovery by the archaeologists in China have raised many questions. The skeletal remains of the horses and a chariot in central China’s Henan province. These were found beside the tomb possibly of a lord.
The horse and chariot pit (No 3) is a cluster of tombs belonging to noble families of the Zheng State, a vassal state during the Spring and Autumn (770-476 BC) and Warring States periods (475-221 BC), near the city of Xinzheng.
The excavation has stated in February, since than this the largest cluster found so far, four chariots and 90 horse skeletons.
“The total number of horses buried in the pit may exceed 100,” Ma Juncai from the provincial cultural heritage and archaeology institute, who led the excavation, was quoted as saying.
The chariot’s found were used by the Lord and his wife for daily use.
In the recent excavation, the chariot found was larger compared to other chariot found. It is 2.56 meters long and 1.66 meters wide, and is equipped with rain and sun protection and decorated with bronze and bone artifacts.
This is a common practice in the ancient times, the horses were killed first and placed inside the pit beside the owners tomb with dismantled chariots added on top.
Till now almost 3000 tombs have been discovered in 49 acres of land with 18 large pits of chariots and horses.
