A four-storey residential building at Damodar Park on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, Sai Darshan, collapsed on Tuesday, civic officials said.

Four persons have been declared dead and as per the latest update a senior BMC official has said that the death toll is now feared to have reached 7. Among the dead is a 3-month-old infant V Renuka Lalit. 11 persons have been rescued but officials fear about 30-40 people to be still trapped inside the wreckage.

Prabhat Rahangdale, city’s chief fire officer, said dozens of people were believed missing under rubble after the structure, in Ghatkopar’s Damodar Park area, gave way. He said they were alerted about the collapse at 10:43 am.

“The entire ground and four floored residential building collapsed. About 30 to 40 persons are suspected to be trapped. Until now 11 persons (have been) rescued and sent to hospital,” Mr Rahangdale said.

According to sources, a nursing home was being run on the ground floor of the building. However, the residents say that the renovation work was going on in the nursing home for the past one-month due to which not many patients were there at the time of collapse.

Fourteen fire engines, one rescue van and an ambulance have been rushed to the spot.
