If you thought you’ve seen plenty of ridiculous, over the top weddings with brides decked up in gold, grooms riding the fanciest of chariots, exorbitant gifts, well you have not seen it all. At a recent wedding in Hyderabad, a Hyderabad based caterer took the definition of luxury weddings a notch up by serving ‘gold rice’ to the guests. Well, not rice made of gold, if that’s what you’re thinking, but rice with a touch of gold.

A video that went viral on WhatsApp and a few social media platforms, shows guests eating rice covered with gold leaves (yes, made of 24 carat gold!) at a wedding.

According to The News Minute, the gold rice idea was the innovation of Hyderabad-based caterer V. Sai Radha Krishna. His client asked him to serve something different for his guests and that’s how Sai decided to serve the guests gold plated rice. Sai drew his inspiration from Hyderabadi-paans (beetle leaves), wherein a few shops sell paans wrapped in a gold leaf (a flimsy foil made from extracts of gold), he too attempted to try the same with rice.

“It is not new to have gold. People have been eating sweets wrapped in gold leaf and silver leaf. I tried the same with rice. I knew that gold leaf will melt on hot steamed rice. I just tried it, and it worked well,” Sai told The News Minute.

He further said that it’s an easy ingredient for him to get. “They are commonly available in Old City (Hyderabad).” And despite its decadent appearance, Sai said that the meal isn’t as pricey as you might think. He said that it cost approximately Rs.250-300 per plate. He also said that it is flavourless and safe to eat since it doesn’t get absorbed in the digestive tract.

Sai’s client list boasts of hi-profile names such as BJP MP Gali Janardhan Reddy, who spent a whopping Rs 500 crore on his daughter’s wedding. Sai says that the ‘gold rice’ was a one-off thing at client request, but he will serve it again if clients demand for it.
